October 17, 2019

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

In last week’s Boomerang I sent out this notice. Holy Rosary will present a sexual abuse prevention program, the Touching Safety program, to your child later this month. This program is provided to us by the Archdiocese of Seattle. Parents have the opportunity to opt their child out of this program (please see below). I will be teaching this lesson on 10/23/19.

The following is a curriculum update for October 21 – 25, 2019:

Religion

Next week we will begin Chapter 2, Made to Be with God. In this chapter we will explore our deepest longings, explain grace as participation in the life of the Holy Trinity, and examines faith as the free gift of God’s own life and hope.

  • True happiness can only come through communication through God
  • Religion expresses our relationship with God through beliefs, prayers and practices.

Math

Mrs. H

We have completed our second unit.  The students did corrections on their unit 2 test, and we discussed how preparation for the test begins the day we start the chapter.  We also talked about the importance of paying attention to detail in math.  In Unit 3, we will be adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  We will work with like and unlike fractions.  The students will also be applying these skills to story problems.  If a student ever wants additional practice, they can be working on their ALEKS pie charts at home.  Students can move up to the next grade levels!

Social Studies 5

We are currently finishing up Chapter 4. Tomorrow students will receive a hard copy of their study guide for Chapter 4. I already pushed out the study guide on Google Classroom. We will go over the study guide and students will have a chance to work on writing notes on their study guide in Google Classroom. The test for Chapter 4 is on Friday 10/25. Next week we will be moving on to Chapter 5 Routes of Exploration to the New World. In a Social Studies Skill Builder, students use an illustrated classroom matrix to organize information about 8 European explorers. Students will work in pairs to become an “expert” on one of the explorers. Then students will play a game in which they answer questions about the explorers.

Science

Students have been testing the pH of soil and water from the fictional town of Greentown. They investigated possible sources of pollution. Students will discuss how changes in soil and water pH can affect the health of an ecosystem. They will then compare historical soil and water data to current data to build a case for sources of pollution in Greentown. Next, students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, implement, evaluate, and improve a process for cleaning an oil spill so that the oil has the least impact on the surrounding ecosystem.

Reading

5th graders have completed the first three chapters of Hatchet. We’ll continue this fast-paced story next week, focusing on comprehension, vocabulary building and figurative language. Students are expected to keep up with the reading, as there will be frequent comprehension quizzes. They should have read to the end of Ch. 6 by Monday.

LA

We have introduced M.L.A. writing format to our papers! Students are working on ‘scholarly’ writing with proper heading and citing. Our next Spelling Quiz will be November 1st, Lesson 4, including (5) challenge words! So, there will be a total of 25 words.  I suggest using this as review study tool as well as looking at the words online. They can be found on my class website: https://6b.holyrosaryws.org/5th-la/.
