Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Here is a curriculum update for the following week.

Monday-Lesson 51
Tuesday-Lesson 52
Wednesday-Lesson 53
No Math Thursday’s

Religion
Today we took the Chapter 16 test. Next week we will be working on Ch. 17, Liturgy of the Word. The Faith Focus points in this Chapter are that the word of God is conveyed through Scripture and Tradition and Jesus is truly present in the word as it is proclaimed and preached in the liturgy.

Social Studies
The fifth graders have begun to study Chapter 8, Facing Slavery. They will be learning about this topic from the West African perspective. Students will break out into groups to face three different dilemmas that the West Africans faced during the slave trade. They will work together to complete the Interactive notebook reading notes in class. The will present their answers to the dilemmas in front of the class.

Reading
Thank you for sending in items for the Lunches of Love. The students had fun decorating and filling the lunch bags. Each student walked his or her lunch over to the Rectory and enjoyed seeing where the lunches are stored. It was a meaningful follow-up to our story about service. This week, 5th graders are reading a Detective/Mystery story, using clues to draw conclusions, (our Target Skill.)

5th graders received their 2nd Trimester Book Report guidelines this week. The book report includes a 3-5 minute brown bag oral presentation, using objects as props to tell the story. These reports are due Feb. 19th. I have asked that each child clear his or her book choice with a parent. Thank you.

Language Arts
Students have been reviewing singular, plural and possessive nouns. Our test will be next Tuesday, January 26th. Students will receive a study guide tomorrow. Please refer to my web page for several practice sheets, which will help students prepare for the test. These can be completed and kept at home. Spelling homework is due on Monday; our spelling test will be on Monday.

Science
Inventions are due Friday, January29th. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week.
Students will take a quiz on the characteristics of volvox, blepharisma and vinegar eels tomorrow.
Students begin Chapter 3, Adaptations, in their text. Students will explore how adaptations help organisms. They will learn what structural and behavioral adaptations are.

Have a great week!
