Hello Math Families –
This week we will continue our study of organizing and interpreting tables, setting up ratios and determining unit rates. The plan is to take a few days to review the chapter mid week and conclude the week with the Ch. 1 assessment. I have hours that I am available posted on the board should any student need extra support. In addition, ConnectEd has several videos directly covering the concepts we are studying in class.

Social Studies

Students are working on Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. In groups, students are planning and designing a Billboard advertising presentation to lure English subjects to their colony. They areas they are researching are: Reason for Founding the Colony, Geography and Climate, Jobs, and Government. Students will be presenting the Billboard presentations on Tuesday 1/22. The study guide for this test will be pushed out on 1/17. The test is on 1/24.

Reading – 5th graders continue to enjoy reading Number the Stars. This week we focused on characters’ actions and words that help us to understand character traits.

Language Arts

We will be conducting our class-wide Spelling Bee this Thursday and Friday in order to prepare for Catholic Schools Week school-wide competition. The top two participants will be chosen to represent our class in two weeks in front of the school! Next week, we will begin Lesson 10 which will include a Spelling Quiz on Friday 25th (no challenge words). I suggest looking over the words over the long weekend to prevent cramming at the end of next week. Enjoy the long weekend.

Science

Student’s inventions are due Friday, January 26th. They will be displayed in the Fifth Grade hallway for Catholic Schools Week.

Students begin a unit on ecology. They will learn about the tropical rainforest ecosystem. Students will be able to describe the niche of several creatures that live in the rainforest including squirrel monkeys, kinkajous and ocelots. Students will discuss how different populations of organisms make up the rainforest community.
