Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Reminders:
Camp Seymour: May 4-6
Camp Seymour Parent Meeting February 26th 6:30pm HRS Library

I hope you all have a great Valentines Day as well as Presidents Day weekend. Here is a curriculum update for the following short week:

Math
Friday: Lesson 60, Finding a Fraction to complete a whole
Wednesday: Test #11
Friday: Investigation Performing Probability Experiments

Religion
We are working on chapter 16 Gathering for the Eucharist. They study guide for this chapter has been passed out and is due on 2/19. We will have our test on this chapter on 2/24.

Language Arts
Students learn about the past, present and future tenses of regular verbs. We practice using strong verbs in context, making sure the tense reflects proper grammar. There is no spelling assignment or test this week.

Reading
5th Graders have been given 2 class periods to get “in” to their books for their upcoming book report project. Since we are launching into a new unit today, no more class time will be given for this. Beginning today, we will be talking about the events surrounding World War II in preparation for reading the novel, Number the Stars. The students will begin this historical fiction book next Thursday. Although most of the reading will be done in class, there will be some homework assigned, so it would be a good idea to use this coming week to forge ahead in the book report book.

Students are learning how food webs describe energy flow in an ecosystem. Students will learn how carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, and water cycle through an ecosystem. Students will take a test on Chapter 4, Tuesday Feb. 24th.

The fifth graders are almost finished with the “Williamsburg” station rotation. They should be studying this chapter (Ch. 9) at home by rereading the text as well as testing themselves on the on-line test. The test for this chapter (Ch.9) is on Thursday 2/19.

Friday 2/20 will be moving on to Chapter 10, Growing Tensions Between the Colonies and Britain.

Have a great week!

Ms. Semandiris
