The following is a curriculum update for the following week.

Students received the information for the Oratorical Festival last week. Included in the handout are directions, a timeline for what is due when as well as a detailed rubric. Please ask your child for this so you can read. Then please have your child keep it in the Religion section of their binder.
Due Dates:
- Final draft of speech typed and due on November 21, 2013
- Note Cards Completed to use during the presentation due on December 2nd.
- Speech to be presented to teacher in class December 12 & 13.

Social Studies
The Fifth Graders have been working on Lesson 4, Why Europeans Left for the New World. We will have a review on Monday 11/25 and then the test will be on Tuesday 11/26. After the Thanksgiving Break we will begin Lesson 5, Routes of Exploration to the New World.
Lesson 5
Students will be able to:
- Explain how the voyages of Christopher Columbus encouraged the major powers of Europe to explore the Americas between the 15th &17th Centuries.
- Identify areas in North America claimed by explorers sponsored by Spain, France, Holland, and England.
- Describe the impact of the various European expeditions upon Native Americans.
Reading
This week the 5th graders studied an informational selection on hurricanes, focusing primarily on pulling facts out of captions, diagrams and photos. The students were surprised at how much information can be obtained through those sources, noting that it’s important to take the time to read those parts of informational text as well as the larger text sections.
Science
Students are using hand lenses to practice making detailed observations. In preparation to use microscopes, students will learn the functions of parts of a microscope, and how to adjust light and focus the object being studied.
Language Arts
This week students have finished typing their rough drafts of their Thanksgiving essay. Beginning next week, students will begin the peer-editing and self-editing process. The Thanksgiving essay will be typed and completed at school. As a class, students are working on Organization, one of the 6+1 Traits of Writing. A due date for this essay has not yet been assigned as students are working hard on the assignment in class.
Please gently remind your child to study for upcoming spelling tests as the trimester comes to a close. The next spelling test will be after Thanksgiving break on December 10th, followed by another spelling test on December 17th. Please be on the look out for new spelling words on December 3rd.
