Reading

5th graders took a quiz on Hatchet Ch. 1-3 on Thursday. Next week we will focus on the main character in Hatchet, Brian Robeson. We will delve into the conflicts Brian faces with other characters, nature and even himself. This will lead to an in-depth study of Brian’s character traits. We will take a break from using the Article of the Week (AOW) as homework next week; there will be other work assigned.

Social Studies

This week we are learning about Chapter 2, Native Americans and Their Land. The test for this Chapter will be on Friday, October 11th.  To prepare for the test, students should be paying attention during class, rereading the chapter for understanding for homework, studying the notes in the Interactive Notebook, studying the vocabulary in their 5-subject notebooks as well as practicing the on-line test.

Students will be able to:

  • Explain how one Native American group believes the world began. (Creation Story of the Hopi)
  • Trace Migration Routes of Native Americans into North America
  • Describe some natural environments that Native Americans encountered in North America
  • Identify some ways the Inuit adapted to the environment in the Arctic

Language Arts

Great job to the students on recent Spelling Tests! The 5th grade spelling test average was 2.5 points higher last week!! Woohoo! Please encourage your student is continuing to study for upcoming tests. The next spelling test will be October 8th. Please note that we will not have a spelling test on October 22nd due to the half-day of school.

Science

Students will learn how weathering, erosion, and deposition change the earth’s surface. They will also learn how rocks change from one form to another in rock cycle.

Students will take a test on Chapter 1, The Changing Earth, Wednesday, October 16th.
