Students will take a quiz on Lesson 1, Is it Living or Non-living? next Wednesday (11/2). They have completed a study guide in class to help prepare for the quiz.
Language Arts
In addition to IOWA testing, this week students continued to work with transitions and practice using them in different types of writing. Students began typing their descriptive Halloween paragraph focusing on sensory details and using transitions. Next week we will resume our study of spelling and grammar from the Journeys text.
Reading
This week, 5th graders explored the News-o-Matic website. Students will be using this interactive site regularly to keep up on current events while practicing strategies to better understand informational text. Your child will enjoy discussing some of these current events with you in the car and over dinner! To see what they are reading, go to www.newsomatic.org. Each student has a ‘cheat sheet’, to be kept in filers, which lists the steps to follow when reading a News-o-Matic article. The back side is a record of usernames and passwords for all of their school sites and subscriptions. These can be accessed from your home devices.
Social Studies
We are currently working of Chapter 5, Routes of Exploration to the New World. Students have been assigned to become an “Expert” on one of the 8 explorers. We have completed a large matrix with facts about each explorer. Now students are reading and completing the “Interactive Reading Notes” for each of the explorers in class. The test for this Chapter will be on 11/10. The study guide will be sent home on 11/3.
