October 16, 2014

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Next week we will be ITBS testing. Please make sure your child is well rested and has excellent nutrition this weekend as well as during the week! Please talk with your child about the importance of doing his/her best work on each test. I will do the same at school!

Week of October 20 -24, 2014:

Math

We will not have math due to ITBS testing next week in the morning.

Religion

We will be ITBS testing in the morning next week. On Monday we will complete the Caring for God’s Creation Poem in class. A rubric for this poem was passed out in class today. All students completed the rough draft in class.

Social Studies

Next week we will be reviewing the Map of the 50 States. We will also be learning the Capitals for each state. Students will be tested on this information during the second trimester.

Science

Students will discover how rocks reveal changes in the earth. Students will be able to describe the rock cycle and how fossils tell us about the past. Students will take a test on Chapter 1, The Changing Earth, Wednesday Oct. 29th.

Reading

5th graders have begun identifying Cause and Effect relationships in Hatchet. Understanding how one event in a story is related to another improves readers’ comprehension of what they are reading. Most of the students seem very excited about this story. Hatchet often ignites an interest in reading other adventure books written by Gary Paulsen.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts students have been working on different pieces of their narrative short stories. We focused specifically on writing a strong introduction that hooks the reader and gives a sneak peek at the story’s topic, and a conclusion that ties up all loose ends and leaves the reader feeling satisfied. Students worked on writing a conclusion that ties back to the introduction as well as elements from the story. Students ended the week by beginning a rough draft for their narrative short story.
