Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
We are continuing to learn so many things this week in the fifth grade. Thank you so much for returning the conference questionnaires. This really helps me make the most of our 20 minutes!!
Here is a curriculum update for October 14 – October 22, 2013.
Religion
We have begun Chapter 2 this week and the students enjoyed learning about Chico Mendes and fight to save the rain forest. We are now writing a Creation Poem, which will express thankfulness for God’s creation. Students will receive the rubric for this poem on Monday. We will work on it during Religion class next week! Parts of our Religion classes next week will also be use to prepare the students for conferences.
Math
Friday: Lesson 7,Distributive Property
Monday: No Math – Mass
Tuesday: Lesson 8, Estimate Products
Wednesday: Lesson 9, Multiply by One-Digit Numbers
Thursday: Lesson 10, Multiply by Two-Digit Numbers
Friday: Lesson 10 – Continued

Tuesday: Chapter 2 Test
Science
Students will take a test on Chapter 1, lessons 1-3 next Wednesday, Oct. 16th. Students will be able to describe how physical and chemical weathering occurs in rocks. Students will make a model showing how physical and chemical weathering can happen using pieces of chalk.
Social Studies
The fifth graders will take the Chapter 2 test tomorrow 10/11. Next week we will be starting Chapter 3, Native Americans and Their Cultural Regions. In this Chapter students will study the different cultural regions within the United States. They will compare and contrast the natural resources in these areas as well as the artifacts that each of the various groups used.
Reading
Today, 5th Graders completed #5 AoW in a ‘quiz-like’ setting. They worked independently through the steps of highlighting areas of confusion, making notes and writing a short reflection. This week’s article was of particular interest to the 5th Graders…..ask your child why!!
