Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope you have a great holiday weekend! Remember we have ½ day tomorrow! Field Day Colors are blue and white!

Math
Tuesday: Test # 17
Wednesday: Investigation 9
Friday: Lesson 91, Simplifying Fractions

Religion
We are currently working on Chapter 9, New Life. Students will be working on an assignment next week about the 7 sacraments. Rubric will be passed out on Tuesday.

Social Studies
The fifth graders are working on Chapter 14, The Bill of Rights. They have completed the Interactive Notebook pages for this lesson and are now creating “Tableau’s” with represent one of the 10 Amendments. We will have the test for this Chapter next Thursday 5/28. Then we will move on to Chapter 16, Manifest Destiny and Settling the West.

Language Arts: Students learn to write brief news articles focusing on the 5 W’s and H: who, what, where, when, why and how. Students should bring newspapers with them to class each day—a full paper is best for the next few lessons, but can be reused each day. Students will also review the correct use of subject, object, interrogative, and possessive pronouns. Spelling homework is due on Tuesday and our test is also on Tuesday.

Family Life: Students will begin Chapter 6, growing to motherhood.

Students will make a model of the respiratory system to show how the diaphragm aids breathing.
Students will learn how oxygen gets to body cells from your lungs and how cells use oxygen to release energy from food.

Reading
The 5th graders have begun reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe as a class. We will be reading much of the book in class within groups and with partners. The focus of this unit is to enjoy a good story, to practice oral and written comprehension responses through group discussion and journaling, and to improve oral reading fluency. There will be occasional quizzes throughout the unit as well as a final test at the end.

3rd Trimester Book Reports were due today, May 21st.

6th Grade Social Studies!!!
6th
The Sixth graders have the Wax museum on Thursday 5/28. (9am -12pm.) They should have their speech written and now they should be practicing it orally with the movements. Please remember to bring the typed speech with the bibliography on Thursday. This will be collected before I listen to the speech.

Wax Museum: I would like the students to arrive at the normal time for school and bring their props etc. to the location that I will be assigning them. They will report to their homeroom to take attendance and listen to announcements. Then from 8:30 to 9:00 they will be able to set up their station. Both sixth grade teachers as well as myself will be there to assist them. I would like to discourage parents setting things up for the students. I would like the students to be able to set up their own stations. If they need help they can ask the teachers. This will make it fairer for the all the students. I do encourage the parents to come the Wax Museum and take pictures and enjoy the various characters in the museum! I have already explained this to the students and we talked about it at great length. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

We are working on Chapter 29 in class. We will have a test on this on 6/1.
