Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Next week we begin the new 3rd trimester. I will be finishing up grading all work from late/missing and absent work this weekend. On Monday I should have it all done. You should look at powerschool and have your child let me know if there any questions about a grade or work that is missing in powerschool on Monday night. We had many absences over the past few weeks in all 4 grades combined, which made for a very confusing grading situation! Next week we will be sending home all the reminders for camp! Make sure you turned in all your forms. Thanks!

Here is a brief curriculum update for the following week.

Math
Friday: Lesson 78, Exponents and Powers
Monday: 79, Finding Equivalent Fractions by Multiplying by 1
Tuesday: Lesson 80, Prime and Composite Numbers
Mass Wednesday
Kennedy Jazz Band Thursday
No School Friday

Religion
Next week we will be practicing for the St. Patrick’s Day Mass on March 12th @ 8:45am. The Dead Sea Scrolls are due on Monday 3/10.

Social Studies
The fifth graders will take the Chapter 9 test tomorrow 3/7. Next week we will be moving into Chapter 10, Growing Tensions between the colonies and Britain. The students will be using the relationship of a “Parent and Child” as a way of understanding the relationship between the Colonies and Britain.

Reading
Next week 5th graders will work with Mrs. Smith to create podcasts. The students will choose a character from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to highlight in a mini-slideshow using our GarageBand software. We look forward to some creative productions.

Language Arts: Today, students should have brought home their corrected Verb Tests. They all did a great job on these tests. We continue to study verbs, working on substituting “stronger” verbs for “weaker” ones. This week’s spelling assignment is due on Monday; our test will also be on Monday.

Science
Students are finishing their examination of owl pellets. Next they will learn how living things get energy. Students will learn the role of producers in an ecosystem and how consumers get the energy and nutrients they need.

Have a great week!
