March 5, 2009

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have been very busy this week in 5A. Next week is also going to be filled with lots of learning!

It was great seeing all of you at the Camp Meeting! Please remember to turn in all your forms as well as tuition for camp by March 26th.

Next Friday the second trimester ends 3/13. Report cards come out on 3/27.

Math
Friday- Lesson 66 Reading a Centimeter Scale
Monday-Lesson 67 Writing Tenths and Hundredths as a Decimal Number
Tuesday-Naming Decimal Numbers
Wednesday-Fractions of a Second, Comparing and Ordering Decimals Numbers.

Religion
Today we began Chapter 18, Liturgy of the Eucharist. Students received the study guide for this chapter today. The first page of the study guide is due on Tuesday. Students also received the “Dream Meal” assignment today. The rubric explains the assignment in detail.

Language Arts
Students begin a unit on narrative writing. This week, we focus on developing character sketches: looking deeper into characters, inside and out. Students develop a personality profile for various characters and write brief scenarios for the characters they create. Spelling homework is due on Monday; our test is on Monday, as well.

Social Studies
Next week the fifth grades will begin Chapter 11, To Declare Independence or Not. Students will be learning about three Loyalists and three Patriots. Students will partake in a panel debate on whether or not to declare independence form Britain. All students will participate to some degree either as a Public Relations Agent, Actor, Investigative Reporter, or Costume Designer.

Reading
The 5th graders continue to enjoy the novel, Number the Stars, while working on building comprehension through the skills of summarizing, creating timelines, visualization, predicting, and questioning.

Remember: Book Reports are due on Monday, March 9th. Each student will be asked to do a short, (3-4) min. presentation of their book report. Oral presentations will begin on Monday and continue throughout the week until all students have presented.
Students have started a unit on motion and design. This week students have focused on the use of drawings in the design process. They drew vehicles they built from K’Nex building pieces. In small groups they used their visual and spatial perception skills to build a vehicle pictured in a technical drawing. Next students will focus on force and motion by conducting experiments to determine how applying a force to an object changes the motion of the object.
