Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Happy New Year! It is great to be back in the swing of things here in the fifth grade. We have been reviewing classroom procedures to ensure best behavior for a learning environment.

The following is the curriculum update for the week of January 9 -13, 2017.

Social Studies

The fifth graders are busy working on Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. Students are working in groups to create a billboard about one of the colonies. We will be completing the Interactive Notebook Reading Notes in class. Students will be using their Chromebooks to present the billboards in class.

Science

Students will be participating in a special kind of science fair called the Invention Convention. The mission of the Invention Convention is to inspire curiosity, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills in our students.

Students will invent a new product or develop a new method for doing something. Instructions and a grading rubric have been handed out in class. A copy is also available on the 5B website (http://5b.holyrosaryws.org). Inventions are due Friday, January 27th. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week.

Students will look at microbes (volvox, blepharisma, and vinegar eels) under the microscope. They will learn the characteristics of each.

Students will take a quiz on these organisms based on the notes they have taken in class on Wednesday, January 18th.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel patterns. Students learned about subject and object pronouns in grammar. In writing we began an opinion writing unit. Students reviewed how to write an effective topic sentence and completed a graphic organizer for their opinion essay.
