Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

This is a curriculum update for the week of 1/21-1/24.  I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!  Make it a day on!!!

1/20 – No School

1/24- Invention Conventions Due!!

Religion

This week we began Ch.15 Sacrament of Healing. Students have received the study guide for this chapter. It is due on Tuesday 1/21.

Math

Friday 1/17: Check My Progress

Tuesday 1/21: Ch. 5, L. 4 Hands On.. Add Decimals Using Base-Ten Blocks

Wednesday 1/22: Ch. 5, L. 5, Hands On, Add Decimals Using Models

Thursday 1/23: Ch. 5, L.6, Add Decimals

Friday 1/24: Ch. 5 L. 7, Addition Properties

Language Arts

This week, students started a new unit on verbs in present, past, future tense, and past participle. Students will continue to study verbs and the changes between the tenses. Students will also be learning about linking verbs, state-of-being verbs, helping verbs, and action verbs.

Students have received a study guide for their Verb test. The verb test will be January 23rd.

Please continue to encourage your students to study for their next spelling test, Tuesday, January 21st.

Social Studies

The Fifth Graders are working on Chapter 6, Three Early English Settlements. We have completed the Interactive Notebook reading notes for this Chapter and we will begin our “Act it Outs” presentations on Friday. Next week we will have more “Act it Outs” a review and then the test on 1/24.

Science

Inventions are due Friday, January 24th. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week.

Students are learning about the 5 kingdoms. This is the largest group into which scientists classify living things.

Reading

The 5th Graders continue to enjoy reading in Book Clubs. Each student is taking a turn as a group Leader. The Leader moves his or her group through a series of activities designed to enhance the reading experience and deepen their understanding of the story. Book Club activities include group discussions, oral reading practice and written journal responses. Please ask your child about Book Club and how he or she is keeping up with the reading assignments.
