Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have been working very hard this week! Students are very exited to be learning how to make a Google slide show on their Chromebooks!

The following is a curriculum update for the week on January 17 – 20, 2017.

Reminders:

• Monday 1/16 – No School MLK Day

• Score a Free Dress Pass and Doughnut Party! Re-enrollment for the 2017/18 school year goes out Monday, January 16th. Students who are re-enrolled by Friday, January 20th through the online form will receive a free dress pass. The class who re-enrolls all its students first receives a morning Doughnut party.

Religion
We are currently working on Chapter 16, Gathered at Mass. The Study Guide for this Chapter is due tomorrow 1/13. The test for this Chapter is on 1/19. Please study the study guide and reread the chapter to prepare for this test.

Math
1/13 – Ch. 5 Review
1/17 – Chapter 5 Test
1/18 – Ch. 6 Lesson 1, Estimate Products of Whole Numbers and Decimals
1/19 – Ch. 6 Lesson 3, Multiply Decimals by Whole Numbers
1/20 – Ch. 6 Lesson 5, Multiply Decimals

Social Studies
We are currently working on Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. Students have received the study guide for this Chapter and we have corrected the Interactive Notebook reading notes in class. We will have our Billboard Presentations from our Google slides on 1/19. The test for this Chapter is on 1/20.

  • We will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King on Friday morning 1/13.

Science
Students will take a quiz next Wednesday on the characteristics of the microbes they have looked at under their microscopes.
Next, students begin Chapter 4, Ecology in their texts. Students will explore the components of soil by classifying the parts into living, once-living and nonliving. Student will learn about the parts of an ecosystem. They will also discover how habitats and niches are related.

Reading
5th graders are thoroughly enjoying Number the Stars. We have focused this week on the theme of friendship as we continue to read the story. This coming week we will be identifying events in the story that exemplify the theme of bravery. We are also reading informational text about this period in history while practicing the strategy of Close Reading. These articles will come home in a packet in a few weeks as we finish this unit.

Language Arts
This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling is vowel-consonant-vowel patterns. Students reviewed past, present, and future tense verb usage in grammar. In writing students began opinion essay related to Number the Stars. Students worked specifically on the graphic organizer and introduction paragraph this week.
