Reading

We’ve begun reading Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award winning book, Number the Stars. This historical fiction story is set in Denmark during World War II. It is the story of bravery and friendship between two young girls. Simultaneously, we are working through a non-fiction selection titled, The History Behind the Story in “Number the Stars.” This not only provides accurate background information, but gives the students the opportunity to practice strategies for reading informational text.

Science

Inventions are due Friday, January 25th. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week. Students are looking at volvox, blepharisma, and vinegar eels under the microscope. They are learning the characteristics of each.

Language Arts

Students have been busy learning how to properly use commas in introductory sentences, opening and closing remarks, and addresses. Students have also begun to explore expository writing. Students will begin a short expository acrostic poem on Martin Luther King Jr. The rubric for the poem will be handed out to students today, Thursday, January 10th.  An illustration will also accompany the poem and the final product will be on display for Catholic Schools Week.

Please be sure to check with your student to see if they have received a $5 coupon for Scholastic. Scholastic orders are due on January 31st . Please follow the directions on the back of the Scholastic pamphlet to order books online.
