December 9, 2010

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Please remember to bring in a “lunch of Love” tomorrow!!!!! 12/10 (non-perishable items only..)

Next Thursday we will be having our class “Thank-You” auction. Students have been earning “Thank-You” cards and now they will have a chance to bid on items in the class auction. Please donate 1 or 2 small items for the auction. ($1.00 -$2.00) It can be items from the dollar store or other items such as candy, chocolate, etc. I usually donate several items each “Thank-You” auction as well.

We will be wrapping the items for the Adopt a Family on Monday 12/13. I have purchased wrapping paper so we are all ready to wrap!

A big thank-you to Mr. Paskett, Mrs. Wiegand, and Mrs. Stoll for quickly volunteering to go out and buy the items for the family this weekend. Also, thanks to all the other people who volunteered!

Math
Monday: Lesson 44, Measuring Lengths with a Ruler
Tuesday: Lesson 45, Classifying Quadrilaterals
Wednesday: Test 8
Thursday: Lesson 46, Stories About Fractions of a Group

Social Studies
The fifth graders took the Chapter 6 test today. Next we will be moving on to Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. In this lesson we will be learning about the differences and similarities among the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. Students will work collaboratively to create a billboard, which promote the favorable aspects of a colony.

Science
Students will explore magnification by experimenting with different shapes to learn which ones magnify. Students will learn the functions of the parts of a microscope and how to adjust light and focus a microscope. They will also learn how to prepare slides.

Reading
Next week, 5th graders are asked to bring Christmas picture books to Reading class each day. They will be spending some time enjoying Christmas stories and analyzing story elements. Please leave those extra-special keepsake books at home, as books will be shared and passed around, and we wouldn’t want them to be damaged in any way. Thank you!

Language Arts
Over the next week, students will be working on creative Christmas writing projects. We work on developing ideas, word choice and publishing. This week, students do have a spelling assignment and test on Monday.

Have a great week!
