Religion

We are currently learning about Chapter 15, Forgiveness and Healing.  We learned about the Scripture story, Luke 15:1-32, The Two Sons. We are also learning about the parts of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Next we will be learning about Father Damien and the Lepers as we look at the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. A study guide will be passed out on 12/7. The test for this chapter is 12/17.

Science

Students will learn about the smallest living unit, the cell, by examining the internal structure of an onion. Students will observe and sketch the cells in an onion using microscopes. Students will also explore some characteristics of life by observing the reaction of yeast, sugar and warm water.

Social Studies

The fifth graders have been working on Chapter 5, Routes of Exploration to the New World.  The students have completed their Interactive Notebook in class and have attained the correct answers from me during class in a review.  We will be playing the “Matrix” assessment game as a review. I suggest that students practice studying for the test by doing the online test. It is very important to not just know the on-line test but all the information in the interactive Notebook/Chapter. So I have been reminding them to study each night for the Friday 12/6 test by rereading the chapter and studying the notes in the interactive notebook.

Next week we will move on to Chapter 6, Early English Settlements.  In this lesson students will learn about the early English settlements in North America by analyzing images of settlements and creating short act-it-outs.  We will be focusing on Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth.

Language Arts

This week students have been busy studying for their nouns and verbs test. Starting tomorrow, students will begin to brainstorm nouns about Christmas. Each student will then choose a noun to write a short descriptive paragraph. This small descriptive writing piece will be due December 18th. A rubric will be handed out to the students on December 7th.

Please continue to remind your son or daughter to study for upcoming spelling tests.
