Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have been very busy this week in 5A! For our Advent Service, fifth graders have been asked to bring in money or gift cards to support Holy Rosary Parishes advent Giving Tree. Money collected will be use to by grocery store gift cards to support St. Vincent De Paul and the Holy Rosary Women’s Shelter. Thank you!

Reminders:

  • 12/6  Tomorrow is the Advent Wreath Blessing Prayer Service. (8:30am School Hall)
  • 12/13 First Trimester Report Cards go home.

Religion

We have begun Chapter 14, New Life in Christ. Students received their study guides on 12/3. We will continue on with this Chapter next week. Tomorrow students will receive the rubric and worksheet for the “My Baptism Story”. I will be asking students to answer some questions about their own baptism. The completed worksheet will be due on Thursday 12/12. On that day I will be instructing students to bring in 20 pictures from magazines, Internet, or real pictures for a collage for their baptism. We will assembly the collage in class. They can also bring in any old extra magazines if you have any. It seems as though the home & garden, travel, and food magazines have pictures that would work for baptism. I will be doing a brainstorm with the kids about the signs and symbols of baptism.

Prayer Partner Cards

Tomorrow students will receive their Faith Family prayer partner for Advent. Students will make a Christmas card for their prayer partner. Those cards are due on 12/17. This is a graded assignment and the directions will be on the sheet that the students receive tomorrow.

Math

Mrs. H

This week we completed our fourth unit on multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  Next week, we will continue our fifth and final unit on measurement.  We will work with both the U.S. Customary and metric systems of measurement.  We will complete this unit right before the Christmas break, setting us up to begin our 6th grade material in January.

Reading

5th Graders have been focusing intently this week on ‘Analyzing Text’. To do this, we have been practicing the strategy called ‘Close Reading’ which involves reading the text through 3 times, each time with a different focus. Students are improving their skills of selective highlighting and note-taking to improve comprehension. Next week we will focus on oral reading fluency through the very enjoyable process of Reader’s Theater.

Language Arts

Our Lesson 6 Spelling Quiz will be NEXT Friday, December 13th, and no challenge words are included. Students will take a practice quiz tomorrow to gauge what they will need to study for next week. We are also working on vivid action verbs, main verbs vs helping. Ask your child about the action verb rap 🙂 Words can be found on my website: https://6b.holyrosaryws.org/5th-la/.

Science

Students will take a short quiz on Lesson 4, classifying plants, next Tuesday.

Students will begin a research-based science unit called Microworlds. In this unit, students will learn to use their powers of observation with the help of magnifying lenses and microscopes to see familiar things in a new way. They are also introduced to a fascinating new world-the cellular structure of living organisms.

Social Studies

This week students received information on the 50 States test and State Capitals test, which will be at the end of the year in late, May. The States test will have a matching format. The State names will be given and they will need to place them in the correct location on the map. The Capitals test will be multiple choice. I will give a state and then they will need to choose the correct capital from a short list of options. They received a map in class and have worked to complete it by writing the state name in the location on the map. In class they used the map of the United States in the back of their Social Studies Text book. I have also pushed out several on-line practice web sites on the Materials section of my Social Studies Google Classroom. They can use that resource as well to practice as well.

We are also going to dive into Chapter 6 in our book. In this chapter we will be learning about three English settlements. Students will be preparing “Act- it-Outs” and bring to life the experiences of the settlers from Jamestown, Roanoke and Plymouth. They will be working in small groups to answer a list of interview questions as well as completing the Interactive Notebook notes in class. We will be working on this during class times next week. The Act it outs will be on Friday 12/13. The test for this chapter will be on 12/19. A study guide will be on Google Classroom as well as a hard copy for everyone one week prior to the test.
