Religion

This week we were very busy learning about Holy Week and about the Triduum-a three-day period of prayer that celebrates the final three days of Jesus’ life on the earth .Students learned about the Stations of the Cross by watching a children’s video which explained each of the Stations. Then students created their own skits. We presented these skits of the Stations of the Cross today in class.

After the break we will begin Chapter 18, The Liturgy of the Eucharist. Students will be learning about how in this second part of the Mass the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We will be taking a closer look at this part of the Mass to understand the meaning.

At the end of April, students will be taking the ACRE test which is a standardized Religion test given to all students in the 5th and 8th grades each year in the Seattle Archdiocese. These scores are not calculated into the student grade but it does offer information about student learning.

Science

Students will use their knowledge of parachutes, atmosphere, and the engineering design process to design a parachute that meets specific criteria for drop speed and parachute size. They will use the data they collected and concepts they learned about parachutes in their earlier parachute experiments to help them imagine, create, test and improve their parachute designs. Students will record the results of their experiments and parachute designs in an engineering design log.

Social Studies

After Easter break we will be continuing to work on Chapter 11, To Declare Independence or Not. We have already completed the Ch. 11 vocabulary. In this chapter students will plan and have a debate between the Patriots and the Loyalists. This is a really fun group activity and the students usually really get excited about planning the debate!

ELA

Hello HRS families! I hope you have a great Spring Break. This past week, students were taught how to complete a graphic organizer to plan an essay. We also wrote a theme essay together using a sample theme. When we return, students will begin planning their own essay with their selected theme. They will write this in class so that I can support and provide feedback. I will also put my notes on Google Classroom just in case your child was out the week before break. Students will also bring home a permission slip to view Wonder, the film. We will complete a compare and contrast activity using the book and the film. Let me know if you have questions or concerns. Take care!
